Ear Mites And The Difficulty They Can Cause Dogs

Posted by Bob Newman

For a lot individuals their dogs and cats are like their young children and they cannot stand to see them miserable. Mites are a thing that appear to influence almost each pet at most time or the other. Ear Mites belong to the same subclass as ticks. The name of this species of mite is otodectes cynotis. These particular mites live in the ears of various animals. Transmission of ear mites is possible just by the animals passing one another.

Several different animals are affected by this particular mite including cats, dogs, ferrets and guinea pigs. On some occasions, these mites can even affect people. Rabbits are affected by a completely different mite.

The first sign that ear mites may be present in the ear of an animal will be a brown crusty looking material. These types of mites do not burrow like other types, so they will be seen as white specs living in the material inside the ear canal. It is one of the most common reasons that animals have ear infections, especially cats.

These ear mites result in bacterial and yeast infections. The ears of an animal will most likely be red and inflamed. The animal will probably spend a great deal of time scratching at the ears and shaking their head.

If left untreated the infection is likely to spread to other areas of an animal. Ear Mites may continue to spread to areas of the neck and tail. The infected animal may end up with a serious skin infection or skin disease. Deafness is another real possibility for an infected animal that goes without treatment.

In order to treat the ears, all of the debris is removed first. Medication containing an antiparasitic is then used. If the person has more than one pet in the home, the veterinarian will most likely provide oral doses of ivermectin for each pet. Selamectin is available for the treatment of cats and the product is good for a month.

The ear mites located in rabbits is bigger than that found in other animals. It is acknowledged as the psoroptes cuniculi. Instead of crusty materials, it produces a thick agency material within the ear. Over time it may unfold to the exterior of the ear and the face as well. Rabbits too will usually scratch and shake their heads repeatedly once they have mites in their ears. Generally clean the cage of the rabbit to get rid of mites, and treat the rabbit with ivermectin. An additional treatment suggests getting rid of the debris from the ear and using olive oil inside the ear. The olive oil is said to suffocate the mites.
