Tossing Out the Old Diet and Litter Box as Your Cat Grows Older
Posted by Bob NewmanThose pet owners which have been fortunate to bring up a kitten to maturity understand how a cat’s needs change over their life. From what the cat consumes to the litter box it may use, each cat goes through life changes just like we do. By recognizing these changes, as pet owners we can make life more comfortable for our cats.
Kittens are extremely energetic when they are young. They are able to eat most kitten food which provides enough nutrients which help them grow and keep in good health. But as cats age, the food they consume often is reduced as their activity diminishes. Regular veterinarian checkups are important to watch the cat’s health. A cat that has discontinued growing, but is still gaining weight, is an important indicator that the cat is eating too much food.
Many kittens are taught to use the litter box with a kitten sized litter pan. As kittens get older, they will quickly become too large for their litter pan. At this point a new litterbox will be needed. Appropriate consideration should be made when purchasing a new litter box so that it is appropriately sized. A large step is all the effort a cat should have to use to for getting in and out of the box.
Toys that a cat finds interesting, which offers important play for fitness, typically change over the lifetime of the cat. As each cat enters maturity, it is more difficult for them to play and jump like they did when they were younger. Pet owners need to be mindful of of the cat’s aging process. Even mature cats like to play, but they won’t participate in activities that would exceed their abilities.
In their mature years, cats will become less active. Their diet and exercise requirements change and require that pet owners address these age related changes. With the proper diet and frequent exercise, a cat may continue to enjoy a healthy and enjoyable life in their senior years.
